Installation Guide

Step 2: Install
Cut the draft stops to length with mitred corners and test fit.
If painting, apply a primer/sealer coat with the seal removed. Take care not to overload the groove with paint.
Tip: At this stage, you may choose to use small off-cuts of the seal for fitting, however if it is impractical to install the seals after fixing the draft stops to the frame and applying final coating first, they may be fitted prior to fixing and finishing.
Once satisfied with the fit, fix the draft stops to the frame using your preferred method.
Typical fixing options include:
- 30–40mm panel pins
- Adhesive and pins
- Screws (where adjustment or pull-down is required)
- High-tack construction adhesive
Select a fixing method appropriate to your frame and installation requirements.
Step 3: Finish
Fill any holes and seal any gaps with an appropriate filler or sealant. Allow all fillers and sealants to cure fully before carrying out final sanding and prep.
Apply your chosen finish to match your joinery. If seals are already in place take care avoid coating them during finishing.
Your windows and doors are now sealed and ready to perform.
Reinstall any hardware, and enjoy the new sound of your windows sealing when you close them!
FAQ
Do they come pre-primed?
By default we supply uncoated. However if you need them supplied primed, we can do this for you at an extra charge.
Do I need to prime the draft stops before fitting?
We recommend priming before installation to ensure the best finish and durability, especially for exterior use. For interior applications, priming isn’t strictly necessary if you prefer to coat them afterward or leave them natural.
Will these draft stops work on all timber windows and doors?
Not in every case. These draft stops are designed to suit the majority of standard timber casement / awning windows, and door frames. However, factors such as latch positions, frame widths, and existing joinery details can affect suitability.
We recommend checking the draft stop dimensions (32mm wide x 15mm high) against your specific window or door to ensure a good fit.
What is Accoya?
Accoya is New Zealand grown Pine, that undergoes a modification process (no harmful chemicals) that significantly increases the perfomamce of the wood. You can read more about Accoya here.
Can you supply different lengths?
Absolutely, you can contact us directly to make a custom order.
Do the same draft seals work for both doors and windows?
That is correct. The same draft stop can be used for interior window frames, and door frames - both internally and externally (open in or open out doors).
Do you have a draft stop for double hung windows?
Not as a standard off-the-shelf solution. Double hung windows vary significantly, so a single profile doesn’t always suit every setup.
In some cases, our standard draft stops may work—check the dimensions (32mm wide × 15mm thick) to see if they can be applied over your existing staff beads.
For a more tailored solution, we can supply narrower custom profiles or replacement staff beads with an integrated brush seal.
Why don’t you offer standard pine as an option?
We’ve chosen not to use standard pine due to its tendency to move over time. Pine can be prone to warping, twisting, and dimensional instability, particularly in smaller profiles.
For this product, long term performance and a reliable seal are key. Cedar and Accoya both offer significantly better stability and longevity, making them better suited to this application.
Disclaimer
Depending on your existing hardware or window dressings the draft stops may need to be notched or cut to suit handles, latches, or other fittings.
As window and door joinery can vary, we recommend assessing your specific application prior to installation to ensure suitability. Installation methods and final fit are the responsibility of the installer.
